The efficiency was not an end in itself, but a means to finance an entirely different kind of expansion.

While Meta was shedding thousands of employees, it was simultaneously orchestrating one of the largest hardware acquisition drives in corporate history. The company’s stated goal is to build a computational infrastructure of staggering scale, aimed squarely at advancing its artificial intelligence research. By the end of 2024, Meta plans to possess an arsenal of approximately 350,000 NVIDIA H100 GPUs, the market’s leading processor for high-end AI training.
When combined with other GPUs in its inventory, the company projects its total computational power will be equivalent to nearly 600,000 H100s. The financial commitment is immense. A single H100 chip can cost upwards of $30,000, placing the direct hardware investment in the tens of billions. This figure does not include the colossal ancillary costs of building and operating the data centers to house and power this equipment. Analyst projections place Meta’s total capital expenditures for 2024 in the range of $35-40 billion, a significant portion of which is directly attributable to this AI buildout.
This spending spree marks a pivotal evolution in the company’s long-term strategy. For years, the narrative was dominated by the metaverse, with the Reality Labs division absorbing billions in investment. While that project continues, it is now clear that the pursuit of foundational AI models and, ultimately, artificial general intelligence (AGI), has become a parallel and equally resource-intensive priority.
The Balance Sheet Logic: Trading OpEx for CapEx
The concurrent moves of mass layoffs and massive hardware investment are two sides of the same strategic coin, a maneuver rooted in fundamental accounting principles. Employee salaries, benefits, and related costs are categorized as Operating Expenses (OpEx)—recurring costs that directly impact a company’s quarterly profitability and free cash flow. The servers, GPUs, and data centers, on the other hand, are Capital Expenditures (CapEx)—large, upfront investments in assets that are depreciated over several years.
By reducing its headcount by over 20,000, Meta has effectively removed billions of dollars in recurring annual OpEx from its balance sheet. This instantly improves operating margins and frees up a torrent of cash that can be redirected into the CapEx-heavy AI infrastructure project. It is a deliberate trade: reducing the persistent cost of personnel to finance the finite but monumental cost of processors.
This “build-it-all-in-house” strategy distinguishes Meta from some of its primary competitors. “Meta is placing a direct, multi-billion dollar bet on owning the entire compute stack, believing its own research teams can deliver a breakthrough,” explains Dr. Caroline Shaw, a technology strategist at the Institute for Strategic Analysis. “Microsoft, by contrast, has structured its bet on OpenAI with a complex partnership that shares both risk and potential reward. This strategy, however, invites deep skepticism from both a technical and business perspective.
